MATCHING FUNDS FOR GREEN CANDIDATES IN NEW YORK
• Gloria Mattera's Green campaign for Brooklyn
Borough President has qualified for 4 to 1
matching funds from New York City's Campaign
Finance program. "I am proud to be the first
Green Party candidate eligible for matching
funds for this office," said Mattera. "This
demonstrates tremendous support for our campaign
from city residents who are tired of watching
[incumbent] Marty Markowitz act as a doormat for
Bruce Ratner and other developers who want to
take over our city. The Campaign Finance
Program levels the playing field for candidates
such as myself who do not accept corporate
campaign contributions, and is a wonderful tool
in support of grass roots democracy." Mattera
and other Brooklyn Greens have been working with
local activists in the Don’t Destroy Brooklyn
Coalition to head off an attempt by billionaire
developer Bruce Ratner to seize homes and
businesses to build a sports arena and luxury
condominiums. Mattera is challenging the plan
and has publicly exposed the secret sweetheart
deals between current president, Markowitz, and
Ratner. Mattera calls for a moratorium on big
scale development of high rises and big box
stores until developers agree to involve the
community in decision-making and commit to
maintaining the integrity of existing
neighborhoods. To qualify for the matching
funds, candidates for Brooklyn Borough President
must receive $49,307 from at least 100
contributors with a maximum amount of $250
applying toward matching funds, which will be at
least $200,000 for the Mattera Campaign.
http://www.electgloria.org/
• Robyn Sklar, Green candidate for New York City
Council in Queens, also received matching funds
of about $27,000, a first for a Green running in
NY. On November 6, the Sklar campaign will have
150 volunteers distributing water to runners in
the New York City Marathon and handing out
flyers to the public.

ELAINE BROWN UPDATE A court decision announced
on October 31 upheld the decision by the Glynn
County Board of Elections disqualifying Elaine
Brown from participating in the November 8
election for Mayor of Brunswick, Georgia. The
board made its decision on October 14, claiming
that she had not lived in Brunswick long enough
to be a candidate. "It's obvious that Elaine
was seen as a significant threat to powerful
wealthy interests who wanted her removed from
the race," said Rev. Zach Lyde, a member of the
Glynn County Green Party. "We believe these same
interests influenced the Glynn County Board of
Elections." The Brown campaign has been the
Green Party's most prominent in the 2005
off-year election. Stay tuned for news about
further action. Greens are urging stong support
for the party's two City Commission candidates,
Gladys Lyde and James Brooks

re-election bid for Boston City Council,
District 7.
MINNESOTA
• Cam Gordon is the strongest in the field of

• Natalie Johnson Lee is seeking reelection for
Minneapolis City Council, Ward 5. Her ward was

http://www.nataliejohnsonlee.com/
• Annie Young is running for re-election for
Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board and is
expected to win.
• Dean Zimmerman is running for reelection for
Minneapolis City Council, Ward 6. His ward was
gerrymandered to run two incumbents against each
other. The other incumbent brought his previous
opponent up on charges and the former
officeholder resigned. Accusations against
Zimmerman leading to an FBI raid seem to have
backfired, since he was only 4 points behind in
the Primary. No charges have been filed, and
Greens expect Zimmerman to be reelected.

NEW YORK
• Gloria Mattera and Robin Sklar: see Top Stories above.
• Alice Green, candidate for Mayor of Albany,
has been endorsed by the Fannie Lou Hamer
Political Action Committee and by NOW. Green
was introduced by the President of SUNY Albany
at a 1000 plus person meeting to hear Spike Lee;
some of those present thought the applause for
her was louder than for Lee. On October 28,
Green urged the city to use its cable franchise
agreement to promote democracy and community
media, and said that she supports requiring the
city's agreement with Times Warner to include
the establishment of a community media center
where local residents can produce and air their
own television shows. Folk singer Peter Yarrow,
a member of Peter, Paul, and Mary and composer
of "Puff the Magic Dragon", endorsed Green in
mid October. "My heart beats in sync with what
Alice is doing. We see many things the same
way," said Yarrow. Green used Yarrow's
endorsement to come out against a decision by
the city Board of Education to allow the use of
hand-held metal detectors in random searches of
students, and said programs like Yarrow's
Operation Respect are a better solution, helping
kids settle differences without resorting to
violence or abuse. On October 14, Green
criticized the police department for not
releasing three years' worth of data on traffic
stops meant to show whether minorities are
unfairly targeted, and said, "While the
department has made great strides by becoming
more professional and cooperative with community
leaders, it remains a closed and reactive body
that relies too heavily on racial and ethnic
stereotyping in its work."

~ OTHER NEWS ~
ARKANSAS Jim Lendall, a former state legislator who wants to run for governor
in 2006 as a Green Party candidate, says he'll
probably have to sue to get on the ballot.
Lendall, a nurse at Arkansas Children's Hospital
and a former Democratic state representative
from Mabelvale, called Arkansas law concerning
third-party candidates confusing and unfair.
According to Arkansas election law, independent
candidates need only 10,000 signatures from
registered voters, while third-party candidates
must have a number of signatures equal to at
least 3% of the votes cast in the last race for
governor. A 1996 court decision said Arkansas'
signature threshold for third-party candidates
was unconstitutional because it's significantly
easier for an independent to get on the ballot.

CALIFORNIA (1) On October 20, California Greens
endorsed an initiative to raise the state's
hourly minimum wage to as much as $8.75 from the
current $6.75 within three years. The
'California Fair Wage Initiative' will appear on
the November 2006 ballot. (2) On October 25,
Greens criticized Gov. Schwarzenegger's refusal
to answer a question about the tax burden of
working people and tax relief for corporations,
saying that the Governor's avoidance revealed
his that he has no intention of providing
genuine reform. 3) On October 26, the Green
Party of California (as did the national party;
see below) mourned the 2,000 Americans killed in
the war in Iraq, including more than 200 dead
from California, and blamed Republicans and
Democrats in office who voted for the war, and
continue to sanction the killings by refusing to
call for the war to end. Greens helped organize
vigils across the state. "Despite public
opinion polls which clearly show the vast
majority of Americans want the war to end, and
the killing stopped, Democratic politicians
refuse to call for an immediate withdrawal. They
continue to de
facto support the Bush Administration," said Pat
Driscoll, a Vietnam-era veteran and former Green
Party congressional candidate. (4) Supervisor
Ross Mirkarimi (Green) released a final study
from a San Francisco State University exit poll
that reported positive results for Ranked Choice
Voting in the November 2004 election: study
authorized by the Board of Supervisors. Read
the report at

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA On October 17, DC
Statehood Greens urged City Council to allocate
an additional $1 billion for desperately needed
school renovations and modernizations, and
called on the Council's Education Committee to
vote 'yea' on the School Modernization Financing
Act of 2005. "We need for that billion in the
next five years to bring our schools up to 21st
century standards," said Rick Tingling-Clemmons,
DC Public School parent and Ward 7
Representative to the Statehood Green Party's
Steering Committee.

MASSACHUSETTS Green Party member Michael
Castronova has been appointed to the Pittsfield
School Board after the seated school board
member stepped down. He was next in line with
votes. Appointed to an elected office,
Castronova is the Green Party's 225
officeholder, and brings the number in
Massachusetts to 24 officeholders.

MINNESOTA In the Minneapolis Star Tribune,
Green mayoral candidate Farheen Hakeem spoke
about the challenge of bringing Muslim and GLBT
communities together in political alliance, and
with typical humor noted that it must be Bush's
worst nightmare to see "terrorists and perverts"
working together.

OREGON The Pacific Green Party of Oregon joined
the American Friends Service Committee, the Bill
of Rights Defense Committee, and other groups in
opposing the creation and use of a new
recruiting database by the US Department of
Defense. The purpose of the database, called
the Joint Advertising and Market Research
Studies, is “to provide a single central
facility within the DoD to compile, process, and

WISCONSIN (1) On October 12, Wisconsin Greens
endorsed a state bill that would allow
municipalities the option of using Instant
Runoff Voting in local elections. Although the
party endorsed the bill, they also expressed
disappointment in the bill's limitations. "Rep.
Pocan's Bill applies only to local, non-partisan
elections and is optional for communities," said
Bob Poeschl. "Although this bill will enable
communities to do a better job of electing the
officials that most people want and save money
at the same time by using IRV, it does nothing
to address the so-called 'spoiler' issue that
Democrats and Republicans complain about
whenever a third party candidate enters a
partisan race." 2) US Senate candidate Rae
Vogeler (on the ballot in 2006) sharply
criticized congressional leaders over the
looming budget fight, and said that it was
hypocritical of Republicans to speak of fiscal
discipline when their war spending and tax cuts
for the rich have exploded the federal deficit.
On October 30, Vogeler expressed shock at news
reports of unprecedented third quarter profits
for oil companies, stating "I cannot believe the
nerve of oil executives to take advantage of
tragedies like Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in
order to price gouge consumers." Vogler noted
that the incumbent, Herb Kohl, voted for the
Bush Administration's Energy bill that Vogeler
argues was "written by oil companies for oil
companies." (3) The Lake Winnebago Green Party
member Ben Farrell has been appointed to the
Winnebago County Board of Supervisors. A senior
at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh
studying English and Philosophy, Farrell has
been an active member of the UW Oshkosh Campus
Greens and the Student Environmental Action
Coalition. Farrell will start his term in
November and will be up for election on April 6.
He fills the seat (D16) previously held by UW
Oshkosh Green David Machotka.

Nations climate conference taking place in
Montreal. It is the first official meeting of
the signers of the Kyoto Protocol since it went
